Chocolate Cobbler is a quick, comforting dessert with a moist chocolate cake topping and a warm, fudgy pudding underneath. Made with simple pantry ingredients, it bakes in 30 minutes and is delicious served warm with a scoop of ice cream.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Topping

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 cup water, boiling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cocoa powder. Stir in the melted butter, milk, and vanilla. Add the chopped walnuts if desired.
  3. Spread the mixture into a greased 1.5 qt casserole dish or square baking dish. Set aside.
  4. In another bowl, combine the topping ingredients: sugar, brown sugar, salt, and cocoa powder.
  5. Sprinkle the dry topping mixture over the batter. Do not stir.
  6. Pour the boiling water over the topping. Do not stir.
  7. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the top of the cake is almost set. The cake will rise to the top while a pudding forms on the bottom.
  8. Serve warm with ice cream.

Notes

  • Make a double batch: A double batch works well in a 9×13-inch casserole dish.
  • Keep it fudgy: Avoid overbaking. Bake just until the cake batter on top is done to preserve the pudding layer underneath.
  • The recipe was edited in 2024 to increase the topping cocoa powder from 1 tablespoon to 2 tablespoons for a deeper chocolate flavor.
